Air Plants for everyone! These beguiling epiphytes do not require soil to grow, making them easy to collect. We love them all!
You will find Air Plants (Tillandsia) growing natively in Peru, Borneo, Madagascar, Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, Brazil, and more. They typically grow in the crooks of larger trees, under rainforest canopies and along the sides of cliffs. They are one of the most adaptable plants in the world. From damp, humid climates with a large amount of rainfall to alpine conditions with mist and fog as their only sources of water, different species of Air Plants thrive!
All of our Air Plants are grown commercially and not harvested from the wild!
Air plants, despite their name, can’t live on air alone. They actually absorb water and nutrients through their leaves, not their roots. Here’s how it’s done:
- Water is important! Rain, pond, or spring water is a great choice. If you don’t have access to those, you can simply set tap water out uncovered for 24 hours to let the chlorine dissipate.
- Let them soak in the water for around 30 minutes once a week or every 10 days.
- After soaking, tip them upside down and let them dry out before displaying again.
- Air plants like bright, filtered light. Place them near a windowsill or outdoors during the summer. Don’t put them in direct sun though.
Air plants prefer temperatures of 50 to 90 degrees F. If you see any browning leaves, simply remove the leaf or clip the brown part off. Easy peasy!
