Could there be a brighter harbinger of spring than the humble Hosta? Hosta plants (AKA Plantain Lily) form a clump of large, leathery foliage in an astonishing array of colors and pairs perfectly with lacey ferns and other shade-loving plants.

Hardy down to Zone 3, Hostas can be grown successfully almost anywhere in the continental US. They thrive in shade, but some will tolerate partial sun or dappled light in the right conditions. They prefer moist yet well-drained soil high in organic matter. Most Hosta varieties only grow to about 1-2 feet high and wide, but they can get bigger- ‘Sum and Substance’ can get up to five feet wide! The fleshy foliage is a favorite snack of snails and slugs, so be sure to have a pest control plan in case the slimy critters come calling.

The other day our head grower Mike proclaimed “It must be March 1st because the Fire Island Hosta is leafing out!”. This showy perennial bursts up from the earth in early spring when many shade-loving perennials are still barely waking up. By early summer, stalks bearing sometimes fragrant funnel-shaped flowers in soft shades of lavender or white appear above the foliage. Though they’re grown mainly for their attractive foliage, Hosta flowers are a delightful treat for hummingbirds.
