The question below was emailed to us last month:

Hi Mike,

How do I keep my Albuca spiralis ‘Frizzle Sizzle’ curly and happy?

Mike says:

Albuca spiralis ‘Frizzle Sizzle’ is native to South Africa.  To keep the curls nice and tightly coiled you need to give it full sun.  If it doesn’t get enough light, the foliage will begin to stretch out and straighten.

Another reason it will stretch out is too much water.  Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.

Frizzle Sizzle is a bulb succulent that is summer dormant.  In spring, it will send out a thick flower stalk of yellow blooms.  When the plant begins to blossom, it sends energy into the flower and away from the foliage which causes browning.  You can remove the flower as soon as it begins to emerge to avoid the browning.

To let it go into dormancy in the summer, simply keep the bulb dry and let the foliage brown and wither away.  When you see new foliage emerge in the fall, begin watering again.
