The question below was emailed to us last month:

Hi Mike,

Is it ok to plant in the fall?

Mike says:

Absolutely! Fall is the perfect time to plant outdoors because the conditions allow plants to develop strong roots in the still-warm soil while their foliage stays cool above ground. They also don’t have to deal with the stress of hot temps, humidity, insects, or as many weeds this time of year, so they can take off and be awesome come spring!

  • Plant in the ground now so they can get established before winter.
  • Mulch around plants to prevent weeds and lock in moisture.
  • Water well at planting and keep an eye on moisture. Sometimes fall rains are enough, but many places are still experiencing drought.
  • Continue watering conifers through fall until the ground freezes. They are still photosynthesizing, even though it’s at a much slower rate.
  • Keep an eye out in spring for dry periods, and water your plants as needed.
  • Enjoy the benefits of your hard work!
