Hey there green thumbs! Have you ever heard of a bog garden? If not, get ready to have your mind blown! A bog garden is the perfect way to add some pizazz to your backyard oasis.

Carnivorous plants in particular need bog conditions to thrive.  They may seem difficult to care for but with the right conditions they are easy peasy.

With a raised bed or excavated area lined with an impermeable layer, such as a pond liner, and filled with a substrate that supports plant growth, you can create a stunning and sustainable oasis.

Imagine the lush and vibrant plants that will thrive in this unique environment. Our Head Grower, Mike Hicks created this beauty to support his Carnivorous Plants.  Want to see how he did it?  READ ON!

Step 1: Choose your site!  Your bog plants will want at least 6 hours or more of direct sun every day.  You will also need to provide water so make sure that is easily accessible.  This bog is getting hooked up to Mike’s drip system so it gets an injection of water every morning.

Step 2: Dig a hole.  (Make sure there are no electrical or gas lines before you dig.) You will want to dig down at least 18″ to allow adequate room for root growth.

Mike chose to line his bog with galvanized netting to keep burrowing animals OUT.

Step 3: Consider drainage. Mike’s yard has very hard, clay soil with poor drainage.  He chose to add a layer of rock for this reason.  The deep hole you see in the photo above was the lowest part of the slope. If your soil has good drainage, you can skip this step.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get your hands dirty and create the bog garden of your dreams!
