The question below was emailed to us last month:

Dear Alexa,

What are some tips for propagating new plants from my houseplants?

Alexa says:

When it comes to plant propagation, these essential tips will ensure success and foster healthy growth for your green companions:
  • Before diving in, thoroughly research your specific plant to identify the most effective propagation method, considering factors like nodes and rooting from the stem.
  • Remove flowers from cuttings and trim large leaves to minimize stress on the plant.
  • For water propagation, wait until secondary branching appears on the roots before transferring to soil. Opt for the smallest pot possible during this transition to prevent overwatering and support root establishment.
  • In soil propagation, maintain a consistently moist environment without waterlogging.
  • If a cutting appears stressed, mist the leaves regularly until roots develop.
  • For slow-rooting specimens, consider using powdered rooting hormones to stimulate growth.

Above all, enjoy the process and embrace experimentation to discover the methods that suit both you and your plant best. Happy propagating!
